GROWTH FORM: fruticose

SUBSTRATE: epiphyte (rarely saxicolous), mostly on the oldest tree branches.
CHARACTERISTICS: dry-green but reddish on the base; apothecia not seen, soredia frequent, very small (lens); as all Usnea species it has a central cord on each lacinia; oldest parts of laciniae have a characteristics red pigment (near the base, where it holds to the wood).
NAME’S ORIGIN: Persian ushnè, moss; Latin rŭbĭcundus, red.
