OCCURRENCE: winter migrant, no nesting population.
CHARACTERISTICS: pink colour with black wing tips; very long neck; short, thick, curved beak; long dark-pink legs.
FOOD: small crustaceans, molluscs, annelids, insects, plant detritus and algae; occasionally small fish.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; groups in large flocks in areas of shallow water.
