CHARACTERISTICS: robust body with short tail; variable colour, usually in shades of brown; cubs have light hair coat striped lengthwise; males with large tusks. FOOD: acorns, roots, mushrooms, fruits and a huge variety of plants. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: active all year; while foraging they use their snout and tusks to open holes in the ground (‘fossados’) to search for food and also to take mud baths to avoid/release ectoparasites; lives in family groups of variable size.
