CHARACTERISTICS: small tree or shrub with evergreen leaves; white or pale pink hermaphrodite flowers hanging in bunches; globular fruit changes from green to yellow and then to red when mature in autumn/winter. ECOLOGY: shrublands on shady or sunny slopes and hills and also on stony soils. OBSERVATIONS: fruits eaten by many animals, including humans; the arbutus berries are used for a local brandy.
