CHARACTERISTICS: perennial bulbous herb; leaves partly wrapping the stem;
flowers bluish-lilac to violet with a white or yellow patch on the center.
ECOLOGY: dry places; compact or stony soils and also trampled soils.
OBSERVATIONS: shorter than the majority of other Iridaceae; the showy flowering in spring is the origin of its Portuguese common name (Little May).
