CHARACTERISTICS: head, thorax and abdomen well distinguishable; dark brown or reddish head and thorax; dark brown abdomen with transversal yellow lines; thorax with more hairs than the abdomen.
DEVELOPMENT: indirect.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: feeds on polen, nectar and honey; pollinator; prefers open habitats abundant in flowers; constructs hives in tree holes; reproductive female remains in the hive while sterile workers bring food for her, larveae and pupae.
