OCCURRENCE: Breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: tall and robust body in shades of brown and orange with black spots; short and curved beak; two plumes on the head above the eyes; cooper-colored iris.
FOOD: small mammals and other vertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: raptor; vocalizes during the winter; the sound can be heard several kilometers away.
