CHARACTERISTICS: annual herb; flower-head with "beards" (origin of the Latin
name); flowers purplish-brown in the center, yellow in the middle and pale yellow on the periphery, resembling the eyes of an owl.
ECOLOGY: meadows; usually in sandy soils.
OBSERVATIONS: smaller plants may have flowers of only yellow, or yellow and pale yellow.
