CHARACTERISTICS: annual herb, usually creeping and with numerous thin stems; leaves gathered in nodes along the stem; small flowers with five pinkish-purple petals.
ECOLOGY: meadows, abandoned fields, roadsides.
OBSERVATIONS: many species of the genus Spergularia are difficult to distinguish.
