CHARACTERISTICS: body hidden in a wide and flat carapace; variable colour, from dark-green to light-grey; pointed nose.
FOOD: plants and invertebrates; occasionally fish and amphibians.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: watercourses with slow current or puddles with abundant vegetation; uses stream banks and stones for sun-exposure; in the drought period stays buried in mud; female lays one to twelve eggs in a hole above the water level.
