OCCURRENCE: migratory, catadromous. CHARACTERISTICS: long cylindrical body; variable colour but with dorsal side darker than ventral; merged dorsal, caudal and anal fins; short pectoral fins; small eyes. FOOD: algae, crustaceans, insect larvae, annelids and fish. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: fine-grain substrate watercourses; nocturnal; able to move out of water between adjacent watercourses.
