CHARACTERISTICS: annual or biennial herb, with many hairs on stems and leaves, sometimes hard, uncomfortable to touch; funnel-shaped flowers with petals nearly hairless, blue or pinkish-purple.
ECOLOGY: cultivated fields; disturbed places.
OBSERVATIONS: medicinal and used in cosmetics; toxic to livestock if eaten in large quantities; when it dominates, fields turn purple.
