CHARACTERISTICS: smooth aquatic skin and rugged terrestrial skin; brown, green or yellowish back and orange abdomen, with dark round spots; dorsal crest small or absent.
FOOD: aquatic invertebrates, annelids and molluscs.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: terrestrial when adult but aquatic during the breeding season; in water males attract females by means of tail movements and pheromones.
