OCCURRENCE: summer nesting migrant. CHARACTERISTICS: dark-brown back and head, white breast and throat; black mask and yellow eye ring; greyish legs. FOOD: insects and other aquatic invertebrates. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; eggs and juveniles have similar colour to nest pebbles; if an intruder approaches the nest, the female moves away pretending to have a broken wing to divert the attention of the potential nest predator.
