CHARACTERISTICS: tree with distinctive rounded crown; trunk covered with a brown-orange bark; needle-shaped leaves; seeds (pine nuts) housed inside cones. 
ECOLOGY: in Portugal it occurs spontaneously especially in hot Atlantic sandstones areas.
OBSERVATIONS: usually planted for pine nut production; sometimes mixed with cork and holm oaks.
