OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERS: greyish orange back, white belly and face; big dark eyes; short curved beak.
FOOD: small mammals, amphibians and invertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: raptor; excellent hearing allows detection of prey (small mammals) in the dark; often nests in abandoned buildings; ‘screeching’ vocalization.
