OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: slender white body with black wings; long, black and very thin beak; very long, thin and pink legs.
FOOD: invertebrates, tadpoles and small fish.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; both parents build the nest in a depression on the ground or in clusters of floating vegetation; the male incubates the eggs.
