CHARACTERISTICS: tree with evergreen thick leaves with trichomes on the lower surface; female and male inflorescence (ament); the fruit, the acorn, matures in autumn; this tree can live for hundreds of years.
ECOLOGY: well adapted to dry places; important for water and nutrient cycles and for soil protection.
OBSERVATIONS: photo with male inflorescence in detail; acorn is widely used as food for Iberian pigs.
