CHARACTERISTICS: green back and white abdomen, both with black blotches; during mating season, males have a yellowish dorsal crest and females a yellow or reddish dorsal line.
FOOD: aquatic insect larvae, earthworms, slugs and snails; occasionally amphibian larvae.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: aquatic or terrestrial when adult but aquatic during the breeding season; larvae and juveniles vulnerable to predation by the Louisiana red swamp crayfish.
