OCCURRENCE: wintering migrant; small breeding resident population.
CHARACTERISTICS: head and back in several shades of brown, white chest and belly; very long beak.
FOOD: aquatic invertebrates and algae.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; very shy and inconspicuous; feeds in muddy areas searching for food using touch (flexible tip of the beak) and vision.
