CHARACTERISTICS: tree or shrub with whitish deciduous leaves with trichomes mainly on the lower surface; male and female flowers separated in aments. 
ECOLOGY: riverbanks, wetlands and floodplains.
OBSERVATIONS: its Portuguese common name is due to the darker green of the upper leaf surface.
