OCCURRENCE: resident; circum-Mediterranean.
CHARACTERISTICS: limp body laterally compressed; brown-green, transversal dark bands with lateral line; long dorsal and anal fins; head mobile and elevated.
FOOD: macroinvertebrates and insects, occasionally small fishes.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: benthonic and territorial species; males nest in bottom sand, defend and care for the eggs.
