CHARACTERISTICS: perennial herb without chlorophyll, visible only in spring when blooming; parasitises the roots of plants of Cistaceae family (origin of the name hypocistis); yellow-orange or scarlet-red scale-shaped leaves. ECOLOGY: shrublands. OBSERVATIONS: cooked as a substitute for asparagus; its stratum is used to treat dysentery, throat tumors and as an astringent.
