CHARACTERISTICS: annual herb, sometimes biennial; leaves from the stem base soft and deciduous and the upper thorny; bluish inflorescences with a central spiny bract.
ECOLOGY: virtually restricted to temporary ponds.
OBSERVATIONS: indicator species of sites flooded in winter such as temporary Mediterranean ponds, visible even in the dry season.
