OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: colouring in shades of brown, uniform in males’ dorsum and patchy in females’ dorsum; females can be mistaken by mallard females, and differenciate from them by the lack of a blue stripe on the wings. 
FOOD: aquatic plants and invertebrates. 
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: often dives searching for food; can be found in association with other wading bird species.
