CHARACTERISTICS: rugged skin; brown, green and orange variable back colour and lighter abdomen; horizontal pupil and green iris.
FOOD: beetles, flies, earthworms and insect larvae.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: terrestrial when adult; hibernates until late spring (May-June) under the soil surface; lays eggs in temporary ponds and low depth puddles.
