CHARACTERISTICS: smooth skin, may have brown or dark-green blotches or lines.
FOOD: insects, spiders, snails, slugs and earthworms; juvenile cannibalism may occur.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: mostly terrestrial when adult, may seek short-term refuge in water; lays eggs at the bottom of shallow ponds.
