CHARACTERISTICS: rugged skin; brownish back and lighter abdomen; copper-coloured iris.
FOOD: large variety of invertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: terrestrial when adult; hunts using a ‘sit-and-wait’ strategy; thousands of eggs are laid as ‘strings’ in the water.
