GROWTH FORM: acrocarpous moss.
CHARACTERISTICS: persistent protonema (characteristic); leaves with numerous lamellae on ventral surface of rib; reddish erect seta with 1–4 cm long; capsules erect or slightly inclined.
ECOLOGY: forms dense, dark green tufts, on soil and on cracks in rocks, usually on slopes.
DISTRIBUTION: widespread in Portugal.
