OCCURRENCE: resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: serpentiform body slightly compressed laterally; lateral line only visible in the anterior part of the body; small eyes; inferior mouth with three pairs of barbels.
FOOD: insect larvae, invertebrates, algae and organic detritus.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: areas of abundant aquatic vegetation and fine-grain gravel.
