OCCURRENCE: resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: body laterally compressed; variable colour from dark-grey to olive and with ventral silver reflexes; scales with dark sides forming a reticulate pattern; large head.
FOOD: insects; occasionally molluscs, amphibians, crustaceans and fish.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: preference for shallow watercourses with coarse-grain gravel; females migrate downstream to spawn.
