BREEDING SEASON:

OCCURRENCE: wintering migrant, rarely breeding.
CHARACTERISTICS: back with dark reflections of various colours, white belly and spots on the face; dark plume at the top of the head.
FOOD: aquatic invertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; feeds in mud on the banks of watercourses, mainly at night; travels in large flocks; song like a lament.
