OCCURRENCE: resident; endemic to the River Guadiana basin.
CHARACTERISTICS: body laterally compressed; dorsal pink or silver reflexes, lateral black spots; small head; large eyes.
FOOD: planktonic and benthic macroinvertebrates, phanerogams, organic debris and algae.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: prefers shallow and narrow watercourses, with medium to coarse-grain gravel.
