OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: robust body with brown back, white flanks and breast; neck reddish at the base; strong short beak; males up to 16 kg with long white whiskers. 
FOOD: plants, invertebrates and seeds.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: steppic bird; relies on camouflage to avoid predators, and only takes flight when they get too close; the mating ritual consists of an elaborate dance.
