OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: male with greyish back, green head and yellow beak; female in shades of brown with blue stripe on the wings and dark beak.
FOOD: gastropods, crustaceans, worms, insects, roots, seeds, and aquatic plants.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: wading bird; prefers shallow waters; the newborns know how to swim and imprinting makes them follow their mother everywhere.
