CHARACTERISTICS: smooth skin; variable colours, from light-green to dark-brown; large tympanums.
FOOD: insects, spiders, earthworms, crustaceans, molluscs, small fishes and amphibians; occasional egg and tadpole cannibalism.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: aquatic even when adult; does not require a specific water habitat, being very widespread; lays hundreds of eggs in floating agglomerates.
