CHARACTERISTICS: biennial herb; small leaves lance-shaped; five petal light-lilac flower with dark-lilac ribbing; globose fruit with an extension on the top.
ECOLOGY: meadows, shrubland clearings and roadsides.
OBSERVATIONS: putative ancestor of cultivated linen.
