CHARACTERISTICS: perennial bulbous herb with light-green stem; long and somewhat thin sword-shaped leaves; flowers in spikes, each with a bract that encloses the flowers; flowers forming a curved tube pinkish-purple to reddish, with a white stripe in each petal.
ECOLOGY: dry meadows and shrubland clearings; calcareous or basaltic soils.
OBSERVATIONS: used as ornamental.
