CHARACTERISTICS: perennial herb, with robust stem; blue-green leaves; flowers with brown male and female spikes.
ECOLOGY: streams, freshwater or brackish ponds sometimes eutrophic.
OBSERVATIONS: used in basketry and cooking in some parts of the world (e.g. in Vietnam); spike reminiscent of a rocket, another of its Portuguese common names.
