CHARACTERISTICS: larva body clearly divided into head, thorax and abdomen; head with a pair of small eyes and a pair of relatively short antennae; three pairs of legs; three terminal cerci on the posterior end of the body. DEVELOPMENT: indirect. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: caenid nimphs live in rivers and lagoons with a thin substrate and low to moderate current speed; probably the most common mayflies in Alentejo’s rivers, feeding on thin particles of organic matter deposited on the river bed; can reach high densities; the adults are flying insects with short lifespans; they reproduce soon and die.
