CHARACTERISTICS: long cylindrical body, no limbs; uniform brown-reddish colour; head difficult to distinguish from the trunk; vestigial eyes.
FOOD: ants, beetle larvae and other invertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: fossorial; rarely seen on the surface; forages for food underground using vibration and sound attraction; one single large egg is deposited underground.
