OCCURRENCE: breeding resident.
CHARACTERISTICS: blue back, head and wings; orange chest and belly; large head and short tail; long and strong beak.
FOOD: fish and invertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: terrestrial; watches water by standing on an overhanging branch, plunges steeply when it detects a fish; the nest is a tunnel dug by both parents on the banks of the watercourse.
