CHARACTERISTICS: back greyish or reddish-brown, yellowish abdomen and tail with long white hairs; narrow head and long snout; small eyes. FOOD: wide range of invertebrates; occasionally lizards and small rodents. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: hibernates during the coldest months; burrows under trunks or stones; if a burrow with cubs is disturbed, the female leads them in a ’convoy’ to another location.
