CHARACTERISTICS: back with variable colour from reddish-brown to bright red, white or black abdomen; bushy tail, usually white-tiped; long and erect ears.
FOOD: small vertebrates, birds, fruits and a variety of insects; occasionally carcasses.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: active all year; burrows are usually holes that it digs in the ground; can be seen during the day in places with low disturbance; game species due to its valuable fur.
