CHARACTERISTICS: integument consisting of thickened hairs forming spines in the back and flanks; colour pattern in shades of brown; narrow head and long snout. FOOD: invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, eggs and juveniles of ground-nesting birds. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: hibernates during the coldest months; digs burrows in the ground or under tree trunks; when threatened enrolls its body forming a rounded and protective shape.
