CHARACTERISTICS: alar membranes bind forelimbs to hind limbs; greyish-brown fur; pointed leaf-shaped ears; small eyes; nasal leaf horseshoe shaped.
FOOD: insects, especially beetles.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: hibernates in the coldest months; shelters in caves or abandoned buildings; relies on echolocation for orientation and to detect prey in the darkness.
