CHARACTERISTICS: alar membranes bind forelimbs to hind limbs; back brownish and belly greyish-white; large ears with prominent tragus; small eyes. FOOD: insects, especially beetles. ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: hibernates in the coldest months; can move in the soil hunting for prey; females are organized into ‘kindergartens’, switching between taking care of the newborns and searching for food.
