CHARACTERISTICS: annual herb; leaves very small, lanceolate to elliptical or spatula shaped, discrete flowers in size and color (red and yellow); red fruit valve-shaped with peduncles curved downward.
ECOLOGY: cultivated or abandoned fields; ruderal.
OBSERVATIONS: leaves used in salads due to its characteristic sour flavor and as seasoning; if dominant turns fields reddish.
