CHARACTERISTICS: annual herb, with many small straight hairs; leaves with three leaflets which give the name to the genus Trifolium.
ECOLOGY: grasslands, dry and stony soils; disturbed and nitrogen enriched places.
OBSERVATIONS: showy calyxes, especially in ripening, red with white hairs on the margins and star-shaped (source of the Latin name).
