OCCURRENCE: winter migrant but with breeding resident population.
CHARACTERISTICS: dark plumage with various colour reflections; relatively long neck and tail; long and curved grey beak; long dark legs.
FOOD: insects, molluscs and crustaceans; occasionally small vertebrates.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: may form large flocks in feeding areas, sometimes together with other wading birds.
